I thought the first duty of any government was to protect its people.

Possibly because the people have heard so much bull from Trump over the past few years that they now ignore him and do what they want. It's been said that what happens in the U.S. makes it 's way to the U.K. and I see a pattern emerging with the Cummings fiasco.

No the majority are not that stupid but the Trump supporters are very vocal in their support, the majority of the gun lobby.  Thy are among those who followed his enthusiasm to inject themselves with substances which should never have happened and didn't among those with any itelligence.
I speak to F/B friends who are very worried that he may get another term in office as they can see what is happening to their country.
Anyone brave enough to voice concern in the media in US is very quickly silenced.

Trump is scary, because to normal people he is a bully and lunatic and as President of the USA has the power to intimidate smaller countries into doing his bidding. Just hope and pray he gets defeated in the forthcoming November elections.
Also scary are his gun-toting vocal supporters, more lunatics to beware of.
