Primarily it depends on a number of factors, like windows 8 or 10 (there wasn't a 9) run V...E....R.......Y S...L........O..........W with less than 2gb of memory, and the more the merrier... my windows 10 all have at least 8gb.
Having said that I'm still using WinXP laptops for certain software that I'm used to from way way back and although there's no official support, they still advise about updates, they are connected to the internet or course and never had any problems.
So I'd suggest not to worry about it, if it's not broke, don't try to fix.
Technically, Win8 didn't really work. Even now in my Win10 control panel it has a "feature" for me to backup and restore to Win7 so I wouldn't bother with eight.
