Aparantly it was the Mayor who decreed that all the buildings should be painted white

Any idea of the date of the photo, Judi?
I had a friend back in the '70's who had bought a place in Mojacar and she invited me to come with her for a month after her husband had died.  It was out of the question as I had a mortgage to pay so need to work.  I really regret not taking her up on the offer as I would have loved to have seen it back then.   She had sold it by the time I moved here just over 17 years ago but said she would come and visit me. At that time she was nearing 90 and passed away before that could happen - she'd been looking at maps to decide which route to take to drive here....

Lennox Napier posted it.  He said 1950.  He also said "The 'old mayor' Jacinto Alarcon decreed that the town should be painted white in 1964. "

Someone else added "The old mayor Jacinto Alarcon brought Mojacar to life , painting the village white and giving land to thoes that would build a house on it many years ago. Talking the government into building the "Hotel Parador" here and not in Almeria. He was a man with a big heart for the people and the place we all call home these days."

That's interesting.  Back then there would have been no tarmac road to my village and many of the men folk had gone to other countries to find work as there were no jobs here.  The women had to knuckle down and work the land in order to survive, with the eldest child, if a girl, looking after her siblings, if a boy, helping  his mother on the land.
Times were very hard for the people of Andalucia under Franco as they refused to submit to him.  Families were split apart and grudges still remain to this day..
