BREXIT CONSEQUENCES
« on: 09 Jun, 2021, 12:50:14 pm »
The issues resulting from Brexit have not been sorted, and this will roll on for a long time.
The agreement was forced through with insufficient time to consider all the implications.
This is clear with the problems in Northern Ireland, which many said would be a problem, but we now have a senior Government Minister saying that they did not realize the extent of the problems.

However what is important is the effect on ordinary British people.

The EU insisted in the early negotiations that those of us who are already resident in the EU must be protected.
The UK gave a similar undertaking for EU citizens living in the UK.
But so far have failed to implement this promise completely.

The other issues which have never been considered.

UK citizens who own property in the EU and wish to use this property without complicated and expensive consequences.
The right to visit as long as they wish.
The right to re-locate to their holiday home in the future.

The right of UK citizens to visit family who live in the EU and may require long term care, without their family having to check the calendar.

The right of thousands of UK pensioners who have in the past travelled freely in the EU for around 6 winter months.

The ability of UK music and theatre groups to have free movement for short term work in the EU.

The problems can be easily resolved, but only if the UK Government would offer reciprocal agreement for EU citizens, but clearly is unwilling to do so.

In the same way the problems in Northern Ireland could be sorted if the UK Government accepted that existing health regulations would continue, regulations which already apply and which the UK helped to write, but it now seems they want the right to reduce these controls.

This is not the version of Brexit which was promised during the referendum.

To summarise. The uk government didn’t have a clue what Brexit meant, they lied to everyone, they helped write the rules, but suddenly have at last realised the implications. They care little for their own citizens nor others who have tried to make a life in the uk, examples are health workers, hospitality industry etc.. let alone Brits who want to sample life elsewhere.

The EU does not trust the UK government to keep it's word and follow the terms of the Trade Agreement and neither do I.
'Getting Brexit Done'  was more important to Johnson and his negotiator Frost than anything else. Now they are trying to modify and change the Agreement terms and conditions because either they didn't understand the full implications of the deal they were signing, OR more likely they chose not to.
The UK government under Johnson is a total embarrassment and for the first time in my life I am ashamed to be a British citizen.  :embarrassed:

I find it very hard to believe that the Govt didn't know the consequences of Brexit.  It was quite apparent to many of us 'lay' people that could see and we were not earning anything like the salaries the boffins and advisers were!  Now it's coming back to bite them in the bum and suddenly they are surprised??  Surely not!

Not just a matter of getting it right, on many points people were lied to and the Reality of Brexit is that the UK is going to be a less prosperous country for some years to come. How that affects we retirees who live reasonably comfortably here in Spain on our pensions, I don't know and only time will tell.  :undecided: :tiphat:

We could be getting increased taxation on our pensions if rumours are correct...
