VACCINATIONS AND INFECTIONS
Spain is attempting to vaccinate everyone over 12.
They are opening vaccination centres to turn up without an appointment to speed up the process, which has recently slowed due to a slow take up by people.
The 12 year olds and under account for 11% of the population.
Plus there are 2% of the population not eligible for a vaccine because they have contracted the virus in the past 6 months.
Taking these figures into account,
88% of the eligible population have had at least one dose, and 77% have had two doses.
In Spain the infection rate is still falling, now below 10,000 daily.
This compares to over 30,000 daily in the UK and rising (which is now causing concern).
The daily death rate is around 100.
We do not know, because it is not reported, how many of these are deaths entirely due to Covid, and how many are deaths where Covid is a contributory cause for people with existing serious health problems.
To get the number of Covid deaths into perspective;
0.9% of the population die every year for various reasons.
For Spain this is around 1200 per day.
For the UK around 1600 per day.
Over time they will be able to calculate the number of excess deaths during any period, but it is too soon to get these figures for the past few months because they are normally calculated annually.
