I've never been able to solve riddles.  I don't seem to have that kind of logic. 🙁

but you've presumably seen the problem with the lift, chap leaves his apartment and travels to the ground floor to go to work, gets out at floor 7 after work and walks the rest of the way up, unless someone else is there in the lift OR if it is raining? 

No! 

He must be a very short person (are we allowed to say dwarf anymore?) to only reach the 7th floor button unless he has his umbrella with him or shares the lift with a taller person.
