There is no urgency.
Spanish government says you can do it if and when you want.
I plan to do mine soon because not necessary while in Spain but useful if traveling outside Spain.
I am told it is very simple.

I did mine and the families in September for two reasons

My girls are now teenagers they need id, I dont want them carrying their passports around with them and losing them , because its a pain replacing them and the cost too.

2nd Also its easier to show, its photo id and in my opinion you get treated better from organisations and other places because it looks similar to the Spanish DNI

It was easy cost 12 euros and I'm pleased I did it, the girls, Richard, his folks and I all now have photo id.

I mentioned it to lots of folks and most of them have done it too. My Mum is next

Yes Clare mentioned it to me, and we decided to do ours, as our old residencias were the A4 paper ones.
Now find it much more convenient, as I don’t have to carry my passport everywhere, or my old A4 residencia sheet.

A friend here has done hers and although she used a company to do it, she still needed to go down to Almeria twice. Once was for fingerprinting and then to collect it.
Is there an initial form which needs filling in an can send off, Clare, so I do not need to use an intermediary?

I processed Olly's and his wife's.
i booked the appointments and filled in the forms and told him what to do.
I charge 20 euros per person to do this

Glad we got the  new residencias, as it has been reported that some ex-pat residents have been sent back to England at Barcelona airport, as they don’t have the new T.I.E residencias, just the old green ones.
Probably a mix up somewhere. Hope it gets sorted out.

Primarily it depends on your status and the procedure for each is clearly explained on the Citizens Advice page :
https://www.citizensadvice.org.es/the-procedure-for-the-tie-foreigners-id-card-application/

The application form is also linked there.

Yes, I saw that: https://www.theolivepress.es/spain-news/2021/01/03/brits-refused-entry-to-spain-at-barcelona-airport-and-deported-as-police-fail-to-recognise-old-style-residency-paper-certificate/

Two sides to every story and maybe they didn't think to say they were on holiday?
