Digging up the rambla
« on: 09 Nov, 2019, 03:25:24 pm »
Spontaneous demonstration to prevent the destruction of the concrete of the rambla.
The Junta requires that the area recover its natural appearance due to lack of authorization for the work

The removal of the concreting that was recently carried out on the banks of the Albox rambla as it passes through the town centre will begin imminently. The independent mayor of Albox, Francisco Torrecillas, has lamented what he recognises as "news that is not pleasant for me."

After hearing the news, dozens of albojenses have concentrated on the edge of the rambla and have parked their cars through it to prevent the machine being moved into place to lift the concrete, causing the arrival of the Civil Guard.

Finally, the machine was removed shortly before six in the afternoon but according to municipal sources will return to try to lift the concrete in the next few hours. In fact, an appeal to return to the place tomorrow at eight in the morning, when they believe the machine will return and alerts will be on the mobile phones of Albojenses.

The mayor recalled that “the concrete was cast because the neighbours demanded it for hygienic reasons, for dust and because in that area there has always been asphalt, not concrete. It was done for that sanitary reason and to secure all the stones”.

Torrecillas defends himself saying “we provided the report of a road engineer specialising in this and that said that we did not accelerate the passage of water.”

The Mayor of Albox understands that "before seeing me in the prison and accusing me of an environmental crime, I'll remove the concrete but the injured is the whole town of Albox" sending a message to the neighbours: "I have to stop this. I cannot see myself in the Criminal Court. They are asking me to go to jail for this action. They have been able to fix it and they have not wanted to. They want me out of the Mayor's Office via the court. so I hope you understand the decision I made."

Surely it would make sense to leave it, it’s cleaner and does the job well?

I agree but sadly, as with most of the things the current major does (heart in the right place etc.), it had no permission and is therefore illegal. Fines imposed to September 2018 were already 80 thousand Euros presumably from the council tax coffers... https://tinyurl.com/y4mztpwj

Having a disabled o/h, the concrete was an improvement if it is removed, problems arise for wheelchair and infirm people.  Can someone cut at least one leg off and see how he copes on extremely rough ground!

Surely this has to be Spain at it's most ridiculous!  Many of us will remember the appalling state the old rambla was; an incredible eyesore.
Why, for once, can common sense not prevail.  How much is this removal going to cost?  Money which could be put to far better use.

As Drax says it had no permission

health and safety had already told the mayor that he was not allowed to cement the rambla. In actual fact the rambla really shouldn't be parked out. So disabled access is not a priority because it's not a parking area
As soon as it rains you are not allowed to park on the Rambla due to flooding. The local police have to patrol the rambla whilst raining.

He disregarded all the advisors, who told him not to do it. After the 2012 flooding and the destruction that occurred in the cemented ramblas in Pulpi and Cuevas de Almanzora. Medio Ambiente changed the rules.

The mayor admitted on tv he hadn't even bothered to ask for a license as he knew he wouldn't get it.

It cost money to do and now money to remove it which we the people of albox have to pay for from our taxes.
